Canada-Latin America Trade: Colombia Leads Growth

Latin America’s trade surplus with Canada falls slightly.

BY JOACHIM BAMRUD

Colombia posted the highest growth in trade with Canada among Latin America’s top economies last year, according to a Latinvex analysis of data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). It also led the way in Latin American exports to Canada among the top seven economies.

All in all, Canada’s trade with Latin America fell 1.5 percent last year to $57.7 billion.  The decline stands in contrast with a 2.5 percent increase in US-Latin America trade last year and nearly flat -- a 0.6 percent – growth in China-Latin America trade.

Canada’s exports to Latin America fell 2.3 percent to $12.5 billion, while imports from Latin America declined 1.2 percent to $45.2 billion.

As a result, Canada’s trade deficit with the region declined slightly – by 0.8 percent – to $32.7 billion. Trade with Mexico accounts for the lion’s share of that deficit.
