Venezuela Homicides Grow Under Chavez

Homicide rates have grown significantly during the presidency of Hugo Chavez.

The killing of Jose Miguel Aristigueta, the police director of investigations in the Libertador municipality in Caracas, marks the 59th murder of a policeman in Venezuela this year, according to local media.

“The fact that not even policemen are safe from being attacked and robbed highlights the seriousness and the level of impunity in which criminals operate in Venezuela and, in particular, Caracas,” IHS Global Insight analyst Diego Moya-Ocampos says in a commentary.
